The Story of Homonymble
I’ve always loved words. My mother was a writer and she was always writing jingles and tag lines for contests and occasionally winning a few of those contests. The main arguments at our dinner table when I was growing up were often about words: word definitions, pronunciation or proper usage . The arguments were usually solved by me going to the dictionary and often saying “ Hey! You’re both right”.
I can’t remember how exactly I came up with the game of Homonymble but I started playing it with friends almost 20 years ago. My husband, Jason, and I are both visual artists but we also share a love of words and word play. We have been playing Homonymble on long road trips for at least 15 years. We’ve kept a running list of homonyms, first on paper and more recently on my phone. Friends kept asking me to bring it out as a party game so in the summer of 2019 I designed a set of 234 cards and had them printed (see pics below). They are beautiful, if I do say so myself. Then the Pandemic hit and I realized that people would not be getting together for game nights for awhile so the Homonymble app was born. Along with my long-time sculpture collaborator, Corey Kapellas, who is also a computer whiz who taught himself how to code specifically for Homonymble, we are introducing Homonymble to the world.
We hope you like it. We would love to hear from you. Please leave us a (good) review on the app store if you are so inclined. It really helps.
We hope to come out with more Homonymble games soon. We’ve got hundreds more homonyms on our ever-growing list. Feel free to send any good ones our way. We might not have them on the list yet. If we don’t have them we’ll send you a password to get the next edition for free.
